In 2011, the war in Syria started as a battle between those who were for and those who were against President Bashar al-Assad. As an authoritarian (meaning in favor of the government) ruler, al-Assad did not allow the people of Syria to have democratic freedoms. Ordinary people did not have basic privacy, as the government watched and kept track of them. Those in Northern Syria were especially against Bashar.
This caused a division in people’s opinions. This caused the Syrian army to clash with the Syrian people, and people from both sides were killed at the hands of each other. Some areas of Syria were controlled by Bashar’s regime and others were controlled by those against Bashar’s regime. The country was so weakened by this dispute, that they had no defence, resulting in ISIS (a terrorist group) claiming whole areas of Syria.
The United States continually made air raids on the area because of this which caused even more destruction, and worse than that, the area is littered with cholera, famine, and severe food shortages. In the recent earthquakes affecting Syria and Turkey, Syria did not get any aid, compared to Turkey, under the claim that these organizations are against Bashar’s regime.
